Willow Recreation Conditions

From Keith Wilson, November 5, 2006:

Recreation conditions for Nancy Lake State Recreation Area and Willow
Creek State Recreation Area as of November 4, 2006:

Current temperature in Willow is 11 degress and there is about 6” of snow cover on the ground. Ice is beginning to form on area lakes but is not safe for travel. Public use cabins in the area requiring lake travel are not accessible at this time. The gate at mile 2.2 of the Nancy Lake Parkway is closed to highway vehicles. The winter trailhead parking lot, Public Use Cabin lot, and the first 2.2 miles of Nancy Lake Parkway have been plowed. Ski conditions off of the parkway are marginal due to the shallow snowpack.

The Recreation areas are closed to snow vehicle operation and will remain closed until there is at least 18” of snow pack to protect underlying vegetation. Willow Creek Parkway is maintained to the junction of Crystal Lake Road.

Denali State Park reports even less snow on the ground there (about 2”) and similar, unsafe lake ice. Denali State Park will remain closed to motorized use until there is adequate snowcover to protect vegetation.

Thanksgiving trip to Red Shirt Lake.
We parked at the Vera Lake parking lot and went to the Big Swamp where riding was ok. We took the Old Hunter's Trail. The first part was deeply rutted from 4 wheeler activity prior to freeze up. When rejoining the Big Swamp Trail, it was very bumpy to the Our Lake Trail cut-off . Was difficult to climb first hill going to Our Lake as it was frozen dirt and we were pulling loaded toboggans. The second hill going to Steve's Trail was the same way. Not much activity on Red Shirt Lake, only about 3 cabins occupied and signs of a couple of ski planes landing. Was 17 below zero Friday night and about 5 on Saturday. While I was walking on the lake, there was a loud wumph and the ice settled. Was a little unsettling for me! There was only a dusting of snow on the lake and only 1-2 inches of snow everywhere else. If you have not done this type of riding before, I would suggest you avoid it. It took us 1 hour and 45 minutes coming out when were not loaded down.
